Drag To Disk Components Missing Error Message

wjnjr

Question

Hope this is in the right place w/ new forum setup, please move if it's not.

I get an error message saying "Drag to Disk can't start because components are missing, please reinstall Drag to Disk". This came up suddenly after Drag to Disk had worked fine.

So far I've tried the following:

Repair EMC8 in Windows controll panel add/remove programs.

Remove EMC8, run Roxizap twice, delete upper and lower filters in registry as per James instructions in old forum, delete any Roxio or Sonic folders and registry entries I could find, reisntall EMC8. All of this done with no other programs (AntiVirus, Spyware, Popup killers, ETC.) running of course.

Still get error message and D2D will not start. No Nero or Real player installed on machine.

What to try next?

Thanks,

Jim

Well, don't get too carried away with the "every other part works fine" stuff. Read other topics in this forum and it's obvious there are lots of problems with EMC8. Surely Roxio is aware of the problems and working on solutions - watch for another patch or update to be offered. EMC8.5? Seems like the same thing happened when EMC7 came out - maybe released a little early but 7.5 fixed it.

In the meantime: As much fun as it is to rant - I know, I do it all the time - it really does little to help and tends to upset the guys who do try to help. There is a lot of talent on this forum, both users and a few Roxio guys from time to time. Maybe we can take advantage of it to find solutions and post them. And if EMC8 cannot be made to run on some systems and the solution is to use some other software to burn CD's and DVD's- Roxio or something else - lets post that too!

So, if anyone out there has gotten D2D to work in EMC8, and surely there is someone, tell us about your system specs, install procedure, fixes that WORKED, etc.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Have uninstalled EMC 8 and gone back to 7.5. I also had problems adding Narration to a video in 8, but it worked in 7.5. D2D still does not work.

Nero Express is a good burning program, but you can't have it on a computer with Roxio.

Magix is a good video editing program, but again, it can't be on with Roxio and is a bit harder to work with.

After moonths of trying to get a solution to the Drag to Disk problem, I simply eliminated both EMC 7.5 and 8. I installed Videowave 7 and Photosuite 7 as seperate programs and have had no problems with getting either of them to work properly. I did download the updates for Videowave. These two Roxio programs are good ones and easy to use as seperate items. :)

1. Remove other packet writing software from your system

2. Update the firmware on your burner drives

3. Reinstall the burner(s) drivers may also help.

a. Go into My Computer-->Control Panel-->System.

b. Click the "Hardware" tab, then "Device manager".

c. Expand "DVD/CD-ROM Drives", then select your burner and uninstall it by right clicking on it.

d. Reboot.

Thanks for the reply alex. I just tried another install of EMC8 after reinstalling the drivers for my CD and CD-RW drives as you suggested and doing all the other stuff I mentioned before. Still get the components missing error message when the computer starts or when I try to use D2D. What to do next? Is there any way to find out exactly what components are missing?

Thanks,

Jim

I am having the same problem. I have done the uninstall/reinstall, updated patch. I am using 7 to 7.1. Just bought a new computer Dell XPS have did a fresh install. No other CD software on there. Just using one DVDR drive. No other drives. I will watch this board for hopefully a solution to our problems.

You can have Nero and Roxio on the same computer. I do. You just can't have both packet writing portions of the software, installed. I don't install any packet writing software. My opinion is that it is nothing but useless trouble.

I'm having the similar problems with D2D as you all are. D2D does not recognize the recorder. Each re-install unsuccessful. The C++ error.

I bought a new Sony notebook, but it did not have DLA. I called Roxio and they said if I got EMC 8 it had the equivalent of DLA.

I took Roxio's word for it D2D would work. It doesn't.

So I feel "I was robbed".

You should re-install the drivers for you CD/DVD burner(s) after the installation of EMC8.

Do you have any other packet writing software on your system?

What is the make/model/firmware of your CD/DVD burner(s)?

I have this problem with both EMC 7.5 and 8. Have spent hours on line with the email support and on the phone with live support and they can not give any solution. Their standard reply is to do a "clean" uninstall using Roxizap and editing the registry. NONE OF IT WORKS. I took my machine and the CD to my computer teck person and he could not get it to work.

I am really angry about this as it seems that all Roxio wants is to get the $ for the program and to heck with making it work. :)

Tried the driver reinstall - no luck. "D2D can't start because components are missing"

How do we find out which components?

To answer your questions:

1) No other packet writing software on machine - ie InCD

2) Plextor PlexWriter 40/12/40s w/ firmware v1.05 connected to Adaptec 39160 dual chanel SCSI 160 card w/ latest drivers from Adaptec.

Hope this helps. I've also tried going back to EMC 7.5 but it failed to install properly. Any thoughts on how to do this?

Jim

Also tried the update to 8.05. It went OK but D2D still won't start.

Yeah, I think a lot of us know how you feel. This post has been up on the forum for over a month and is one of the most read, yet there still is no solution to what is a very common problem. It's interesting to read through the posts in this forum and to note a pattern in the respones:

Post: I have a problem with EMC8, please help. :D

Reply: Update your drivers and firmware. :D

Post: Still have a problem, what next?

Reply: Your hardware is junk. :P

Post: Tried EMC8 on different hardware/computer, still have a problem. :D

Reply: You must be an idiot, EMC works for me. :D

Post: What the @#$%! I'm just trying to get this thing to work! :D

Reply: Well, you have to understand, this software - packet writing, backup, video editing, whatever - Is notoriously unreliable and should not be used. What are you using it for anyway? :D

Post: I just thought it might work as advertised. Now I know better. Last Roxio anything I will buy. :)

Reply: Don't get nasty with me! I'm just a volunteer helper, I don't work for Roxio! :D

It is obvious what is going on:

While EMC8 must work well on some machines, there are BIG problems getting it to work on the (very diverse) installed base. This is understandably a tough job but is one faced by every software company. Roxio/Sonic really dropped the ball on this one. Surely they are aware of the problems and will soon offer a solution. That is, if they want to be in business a year from now.

Still trying to fix the "missing components" error message - anyone have any luck with this?

Thanks in advance ,

Jim

I can understand how you feel, I've been trying to resolve this problem for about a month now. Given the number of people reading this thread it seems that the problem is widespread. Maybe someone will figure out why it happens and how to fix it.

I have 'unable to find certificate file' before the same 're-install Drag-to-Disk' message.

Can anyone tell me what 'packet writing' is? I don't know whether I have it or not.

Yeah, you do have it. Drag to Disk is 'packet writing'

Finally had time to fix the problem. Formatted my HD, reinstalled Windows and my other stuff and then installed EMC 7.5. That's right, EMC 7.5. For whatever reason EMC8 will NOT function properly on my machine. So now, over two months later, I'm back where I started with a fully functional, CD burning capable computer. That's all I wanted in the first place.

Here's what I've learned from all this:

1) EMC8 is problematic: While it surely works on some machines, it does not work properly for lots of users. This is evidenced by reading the posts on this forum. Lots of problems and very few solutions. When solutons are found, more often than not it is the user who finds them rather than Roxio people or 'gurus'. It is pointed out repeatedly that this forum is 'sponsored not supported' by Roxio. But Roxio does monitor the forum and in the past, with earlier versions of EMC, Roxio people have been very forthcomming with help. With EMC8 this is not the case. This would indicate that while Roxio is aware of the problems they are unable to solve them at this time or that they simply don't care - after all they have your money. My advice to anyone considering buying EMC8 is: Don't. Wait for the patch/update/new version. EMC8.5 maybe? 8.05 is no better.

2) (Most important) When you have a hardware/software comfiguration that works reliably and does what you need to do, resist the pressure to upgrade constantly. Lots of hype from software vendors about why you must have the latest and greatest, but you probably don't need it. Some people (like myself) like to tinker with computers but the majority of users just want to turn them on and have them work.

End of rant. Peace out. :)

Your not alone, I'm having the same problem, I've spent all day trying to resove this with no luck. You would think Roxio would mon. this board , I'm sure there is a simple fix for this if you knew exactly how it works.

There's got to be a simple component that is missing or misplaced.

I've also tried all the above mentioned remedies, still "component missing".

Come on monitor give us a remedy.

We have a forum for EMC 7. You need to post this topic there.

I agree with you on the waiting to get EMC 8, depending on what you are doing. If you are doing video editing or making slide shows, stay with version 7.1 or 7.5. They are far superior to version 8.

If you use other features outside of the video programs, then version 8 is much more versatile than previous versions and is worth getting.

Version 8 runs well on my computer.

I had the same problem..

D2D components Missing..

On Mine, I got it to work.

I have 2, Plextor DVD+-RW drives.. (1-712, 1-716)

I disconnected one of them... Installed Roxio 8, it worked fine.. D2D too...

I then did the 8.05 update, D2D works fine..

I then installed the 2nd Plextor again... D2D showed Components Missing..

So... I now know what cause it on mine.. have 2 DVD-RW drives, it seems, D2D Gets confused.

So... I just ran the install for ROXIO again, and selected, REMOVE D2D..

No other problems..

When I see a fix, for BOTH DVD+RW drives to work again.. I will re-install D2D...

That's my "experience"... hope it helps..

D2D, just doesn't seem to like 2 Plextor DVD+RW Drives at the same time

I've just started to get the same annoying message "drag to disk necessary components are missing" after it had been working okay. It would be nice if they would deliver the goods...I'm sure my money they have been able to use without any errors.....I've bought my last Roxio product.
