Question Re: Roxio Creator 2012 - Best Practices For A Clean & Trouble Free Install

Question

Hi,

I have been a Roxio member since 2008 or 2009, but I usually find what I need without actually having to submit question to the forum. I hope I am following correct procedure and etiquette by starting new thread. (I was unable to find exactly the answer or guide to my question)

Here are my pc specs…

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and all current updates (as of 04.27.2013) except IE10

Computer: Asus G50VT-x5 Gaming Laptop

Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU T9600 @ 2.80GHz

Crucial Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB (2x4) 240-Pin DDR2 6400

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS - 512 MB (Total available graphics memory 4095 MB)

DirectX 10

Samsung SSD 840 Series 191 GB Free (210 GB Total) OS and Programs

Seagate HDD 8MB Cache 5400 RPM 929 GB Free (932 GB Total) Data and Users

CD/DVD Burner 24x/8x with Lightscribe

Roxio Programs I have…

Roxio Creator 2011 Pro (also have the SP1 update on a USB Flash to update it)

Roxio Creator 2012 Plus (Sam’s Club version just like regular 2012, but missing BackOnTrack) I got it for only $30 at Sam’s Club yesterday and the new NXT has more than I would use.

Setup…

I just did (yesterday) a complete “Clean Install” of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and all current updates (as of 04.27.2013) except IE10. I have installed MS Office 2007 Pro with updates and have also installed Kaspersky Internet Suite 2013. I have updated all the drivers (Intel, NVIDA, etc.). I also have installed Cyberlink DVD Suite Power2Go 6.0. (I upgrade the hardware on laptop… that’s why I did a clean install of everything. The Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 is a standalone install, not a manufacture OEM image, no bloat.)

Down to it…

  1. I am now ready to install Roxio Creator and was wanting to know what the “Best Practices” for a successful install would be… you know the best steps … like turn off Kaspersky… don’t run any programs… then do this… then do that… for best install results.

  1. I would also like to know if I should install Roxio Creator 2011 Pro first…. Install the SP1 update for Roxio Creator 2011 Pro… and finally install Roxio Creator 2012 Plus.

OR

Just install Roxio Creator 2012 Plus.

The reason I am asking is 2011 Pro has a few things that 2012 Plus does not (BackOnTrack 4, SmartSound Sonicfire Pro, SoundSoap SE) I could probably live without the stuff on 2011 Pro, but I have it… so… you know... I paid for it.

  1. Last question… and it may be moot… I had Roxio Creator 2011 Pro on this same machine before I did the Windows “Clean Install” yesterday. I was told by Roxio that I would be able to reinstall it using the original, registered to me, disc and key I have without issues because I was “deleting” it and reinstalling it… plus they do not support it anymore so updates not an issue. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance,

GCF aka Drizzt

Info on link looks good... will update DirectX to 11, make sure CD/DVD firmware is up to date and make sure EVERYTHING is turned off when I install. (should I disconnect from internet too?)

And comments or thoughts regarding questions 2 and 3?

2. I would also like to know if I should install Roxio Creator 2011 Pro first…. Install the SP1 update for Roxio Creator 2011 Pro… and finally install Roxio Creator 2012 Plus.

If you want Sonicfire Pro, SoundSoap, etc. They should be on a second disc. They should install independently from Creator 2011 The keys should be on the envelop. You do not need to install 2011 Pro. to get them.

If you installed Creator 2011, and then Creator 2012, then 2012 would remove most everything from 2011 except for CinePlayer. Do you have the blu ray plug in?

BOT - are you using it? It has a functionality that seems be be lost just when you need it.

2012 has a different audio program called Izotope. It is not as good as Sound Soap. Sound Soap has gone out of business so you MAY have issues registering it. The registration was active a couple of months

ago.

Your question 3 is moot because you don't need it. I don't know if the Creator 2012 Plus would leave anything of the 2011 Pro except for those items on the second disc.

BTW, go to the top of this page and select 'Support" Product updates are listed in the second tab.

Does that help? ^_^

Yes... this helps a lot...

I can do with out the CinePlayer... that's just to watch video right? blue ray plugin came with 2011 Pro, but never used so no big loss.

I have the second 2011 pro disc with Sonicfire Pro, SoundSoap and the cool 3-d glasses :P ... but to be honest I did not use either that much.

I guess the only thing I am really losing is BackOnTrack as it is not part of the 2012 Plus... liked it... but can live without. :glare:

I will check the support page... but I don't think I saw any patches/updates for Creator 2012.

Thanks again for the advice and the link to best practices page. :D

Have grea day!

OK... JOY... :D

Followed the directions for install in the link above and this was the easiest Roxio Creator Install for me yet!

I have opened just about every application with out issue or hang up!

THANK YOU Digital Guru... I was worried by a lot of problems others seem to have had... They should put those directions in the box with the software and say "Follow this letter by letter or else!"

Now that I think I am up and good to go... a few final questions.

First one is..... I am a resource watcher... I mean really bad, I hate stuff running that does not need to run... and want to know if I can stop/turn off some stuff is System Config. that Roxio 2012 install added.

System Config. Services Tab

RoxMediaDB13 (Rovi Corp)

Roxio Hard Drive Watcher 12 (Rovi Corp)

Leave these alone? Don't uncheck the box?

System Config. Startup Tab

Common SDK (Rovi Corp)

CPMonitor Application (Roxio)

Software Manager (Flexera Software, Inc)

Roxio Burn (Roxio)

Leave these alone? Don't uncheck the box?

Second question... On the Roxio Creator 2012 Home screen/tab, when I click on the help menu and select check for updates I receive an error message in the Software Manager box...

"Available Software Updates"

"Download Faled"

"Either you are not connected to the Internet or the FLEXnet Connect servers are currently unavailable."

"Click Retry if you know that you are connected to the Internet."

"Click Cancel to skip the check for updates."

I am connected to the internet no doubt about it.... I might usually think the "FLEXnet Connect servers are currently unavailable" except I was getting this same message a few days ago with Roxio 2011 Pro before I did the clean install of windows. I just thought the were not supporting 2011 anymore and that was why... I think they are still supporting 2012 with updates?

Any ideas or advice would be appriciated.

Thanks

Turn it off, uncheck the box.

The Software Manager is broken. There are no updates and that is the best they can do at the moment.

If it ain't broke don't look for a way to break the software, just use it...

:P

Got it... it works don't break it by updating.

As for the stuff in the system config Services and Startup... I know how to turn off... just wondering if I should or could turn some of those off. ;)

BTW... I said "Digital Guru" think that was a person's name  I should have said thanks sknis for the help this morning and thank you cdanteek for the help currently.

I have seen both of you alls icon/image for years now and actually should say thanks for the help you did not know you gave me too. :)
