Nxt Hangs After Chapters Are Created, When In Mydvd

Recommended Posts

I have used Creator NXT for many dvd projects, since Dec and it worked great. Lately a few times after chapters are added, it freezes when I wish to open the chapter menu to name them.

Last night I added manually a chapter at a time and named them one at a time and no freeze. That won't even work today in the next project. I open Task manager performance window and when NXT freezez the CPU usage spikes from 10% to 60% and stays there till I end Mydvd in process window to stop it.

Have reinstalled NXT three times and it makes no diff. Have defragmented, restored, ran scans for virus and malware. Computer works fine nothing helps

Any one else see this issue.

I haven't. When was the last time you did maintenance on your computer (get rid of programs that you don't use, clean up the temp and tmp files and do a thorough defrag of the hard drive(s)? Go here for some free tools.

What else do you have running while you are doing any video editing? Use Windows msconfig.exe to minimize things that start at boot.

Do you have your antivirus set to ignore what is being written to your hard drive while you are doing this?

When it goes to 60% (which would not be unusual), how long do you wait before killing the program?

I have emptied the temp files. like 3000 were there! Defraged with Win 7, Avast scan, WinZip Malware protector. Restarted with no other open programs did not help.

Will try msconfig.exe.

I stopped antivirus during reinstalls.I left Mydvd run on burn to image last night and and it hung at 97% with higher CPU usage, so it was running about 6 hrs hung up.

Is it possible that a particular AVCH file would cause this? I am attempting 2 DVD's for the set of this event and one file seems to upset NXT and cause the CPU usage when editing, setting chapters and burning.

All files recorded within 2 hours, 6 in all, the bad one is number 3.

Could you explain exactly what you are trying to do and what you are doing? You talk about AVCHD files, creating 2 DVds .. ???

What does this mean: "All files recorded within 2 hours, 6 in all, the bad one is number 3."

What is your definition of chapters?

My HD camcorder makes AVCHD video (.MTS) files and saves a separate file each time you pause. This event made 6 separate files, that I recorded within 2 hours.

To make a DVD one has to add up a few of these. I used a +R DL and 2- 4.7+R DVD's for the event burned in HD.

I also wish to make the 6 files, total 15.33Gb onto 2- 4.7 DVD's in lower quality.

I have made one and quality is still great. The second project is giving trouble as one of the AVCHD camcorder files gives NXT and the CPU a fit.

Chapters are where each of these files are added. I did not split them any further in edit. Then back in Mydvd, I wish to name these chapters, and that is where NXT hangs. It will not even preview, and hangs.

Hope that is clear. thanks.

File size means almost nothing when you talk about video. It is the time length that is important.

A standard 4.7 GB DVD can hold 60 minutes of video at the HQ (best) quality setting. A DL DVD will hold slightly less then 120 minutes at the same setting.

If you are creating an AVCHD DVD disc then it can hold only 40 minutes.

What you are calling chapters are called Titles in video terminology. Chapters are sub-divisions of a Title.

Are you "burning" direct to DVD or are you first "burning" to a image file or a folder set?

"In addition to the menu titles and button labels that MyDVD creates automatically, you can add blocks of text to menus. You can edit text blocks, including button labels and the menu title.",

I see the term title here in help, but in project view under menus it uses "chapter menu", that why I used it.

That is what I am unable to do is add text to the titles, I guess, but they are "buttons" under each title or chapter as in project. Does that sound correct?

Yes I have tried both to DVD and to an image, neither will finish, NXT hangs. When I END Mydvd in Task Manager, Windows always checks for a problem but I have never a solution pop up!

The first project was 47 minutes on HQ, 8.35 Gb of AVCHD files. This particular project is 39 minutes in HQ, original AVCHD camcorder files total 6.98 Gb. I tried putting all 15.33 Gb on one DVD and quality was poor.

I assumed that meant some quality loss, maybe not. Why would one ever create a AVCHD DVD disc, what advantage is there? It certainly uses 100% of my CPU while encoding an AVCHD project.

AVCHD discs and blu ray are the only way you can burn high definition videos to discs. US is 1440 by 720 or 1920 by 1080 (and variations). Anything else that plays on a DVD player are standard definition. US is 720 by 480 (lines) Because of that, your high definition files will look much poorer than on your computer.

A person would burn an AVCHD disc becasue you use a standard computer burner and a standard disc. With DL disc, you can get about 1 1/2 hours. Of course you would need a blu ray player that will play AVCHD discs. Many do. You do not need to have a blu ray burner and use the expensive blu ray discs.

Depending on the ability of your TV, you can copy the video to a thumb drive at high definition and play those on the TV directly.

sknis has commented regarding t AVCHD on DVD.

Exactly how are you creating the DVD? A step-by-step description would be helpful. From your post I assume that you are creating 2 standard DVDs. That means of course that your video will be lower quality that your original HiDef video. What menu style do you select when myDVD is launched?

Each time you add a video clip a new Title will be created on the main menu page. (These menu items are not chapters). Depending on the menu style you are using you can have thumbnails with text underneath or strictly text items. In either case the text for each title can be easily modified. Is that where you are having the hangup?

Breaking up the videos into 2 projects (47 min and 39 minutes) is the best way and will give you the best quality.

Yes quality is less than HD but VG.

I started with a DVD project, then I chose the Premier menu style, clicked add new movie. I then named the project and added the dates. Both text were made bigger font.

I save project as... next. Then click edit movie, then click add photo/video and add two more files, one at a time, after the current panel in the choices offered.

Then I click back to MYDVD, there I click the project, then edit chapters button.

I select at the start of every panel and click GO. Then the titles appear in the project view with numbers.

I wish to add text to them so at this point I click chapter menu and 99% of the time it appears and I add the text.

That is where this project hangs, never showing the titles with numbers.

How does that sound? I have used MyDVD Studio Deluxe from 2005 on Win XP , and Creator Pro 2011 on Win 7, now NXT Pro on same computer.

I have burned over 200 DVD's, so am not new to it, had other issues, never had this issue.

Thanks for help, will try above suggestions.

What you have described should work without any problems.

You are actually merging the video clips into one movie (title) and then creating chapter points for that title. The disadvantage of doing it that way is that when you select a chapter from the menu the video will play from that point to the end of the whole video. On the other hand if you want to select a video clip and only play that video clip and then return to the main menu to select another clip the chapters method will not work.

At this point though I do not understand why the Chapter menu does not appear for you.

Now that I examine your description of your project more closely, I see this is a different situation than I first thought. Still, you might care to look at my work around for a Chapter Menu hanging problem posted in the Creator 2012 Program Error/Crashes/Hangs section entitled: Mydvd Hangs When Adding A Chapter Menu - Possible Work-Around

It may offer you some insight into your problem by explaining a solution to what is causing the Chapter Menu to hang when adding multiple chapters to a single video.

Best regards,

Scott

I had a similar problem; the hang happened during burning. It would get to 97% and hang on the "render menus" step. I accidentally discovered that it only occurred on the particular Menu Style I was using. (Sorry I don't remember which style it was.) I changed style and problem went away.

I too would like to have a solution. For years MYDVD worked pretty much okay on earlier versions but I'm finding a similar situation. I have found a couple of little tricks though. In making a blu-ray disk after adding the clips and picking a style then changing the background image for one of my own and of course saving the project I then tried to add chapters. It hung almost immediately this menu style would create 6 chapters per screen and it failed pretty quickly. I then reloaded the project changed the menu style to one that had 3 chapters per screen and it again crashed. I then tried creating the chapters from the last clip first and volia it worked so I saved that project. Next I tried to change the backgrounds on the chapters to my own and I was able to do it on the 5th of 5 clips working the same way I was able to make the chapters work. As soon as I went to change the background on the 4th clip it locked up. This is a for sure program error I had nothing else running and my machine is a dual quad core xeon workstation with win 7 pro 64 with 16gig of ddr2 ecc memory and it doesn't hang on anything. I have 6 terabytes of storage with lots of open space on various drives so don't tell me its a resource problem. I can hit task manager and close after the crash and everything will work fine. Oh as comment to those who are failing on the DVD/Blu-ray creation don't try and burn it as you finish a project always select create iso image file it takes less time and fails far less often. After you create the image you can come back and burn it without issue using Roxio or any burning software.

I am back trying to use NXT. Still hangs when attempting to name chapter points. I tried Scott's work around and was able to name each chapter. However after all finished with the project attempting to burn to file, not a DVD, NXT freezes at 78% when at menus. On 2 other similar AVCH projects, it burned to image fine but needed several attemps. Computer restarted with no other programs running. Did a "repair", no help. Tried "msconfig.exe" but Creator needs audio and I am unable to find all the needed startup for audio so gave up. Nothing seems to work. Any other ideas?

I am having the same problem when trying to create chapter titles......the moment I click on title one, the software freezes up and only TAsk manager gets me out, but also closes the program and the work I have done is lost. This happens on either computer, since I have this program on two home computers. Help.

I have had the exact same issue since NXT Pro 2. I create chapters and when I click on menu page link the program hangs after managing one successful round of chapter naming. Can't even manually change the chapter names. Have had this issue on 2 HP towers. Installed NXT 3 Pro on my current HP 64-bit tower is running OS 8.1, i5 CPU, 16 GB RAM. A friend is having same issue on an HP laptop running OS 7. Any workaround suggestions?

Again just like for the other posters in this thread: you do not have the same issue but only similar symptoms.

Please describe exactly what you are doing. Start with adding the video clips, how you set up the menu, the linkage, etc.

There is really no info in your post other then it doesn't work. There is no workaround required if the process is done correctly.

I have no idea what you mean by "one round of chapter naming"

By one round of chapter naming I meant I could successfully name the chapers of one video clip, and could not for other video clips. Sorry for not being clearer. To get to my procedure I:

- click on Add New Movie

- click on Edit Chapters

- create my chapters (Generate chapter menu(s) and link to selected button is selected)

- click on OK

- then control-s the project, after that I

- click on Chapter Menu link of the clip in Project View

That's when it hangs (sometimes it will go to the Chapter Menu window)

Am I doing it correctly?
