Mpg To Dvd Problems

steinmeier

Question

I just returned from Europe with some DVDs in the format that works in Germany. Before coming home I had the same movies that are on those DVDs put on an external harddrive as mpg files. I thought it would be easy to create DVDs (to watch in the US) out of these files by using my Roxio Creator 10 software. When I went into the "Create DVD" menu and loaded my first movie into it I noticed the following: only 157.2 MB moved over. Free disk space: 4542.8 MB That does not make sense because my movie size is 3.8 GB. I can play the movie right off the external harddrive, so I know it is there. I decided to burn a DVD anyways and when I put it into my player it lasted only a few seconds, which goes along with the 157.2 MB that evidently moved over to the software.

Can anyone help??

Thank you!

You posted in Creator 2012 part of the forum yet you say you have Creator 10. Do you have the OEM version that came with the computer like Creator 10.x DE or SE, Do you have Easy Media Creator 10 or do you have Creator 2010?

Creator 10.x is a cut down version of the full product.

Easy Media Creator 10 is an old version and not compatible with more recent Windows Operating Systems.

Creator 2010 is newer; what operating system are you using?

Of course since you posted here, you could have made a typo and really do have Creator 2012. Please clarify.

BTW, are the DVDs commercial videos that may be copy protected?

Copy the DVD to a folder on your hard drive and then open the folder, you should see a bunch of VOB files that you can use. A VOB file is a mpg2 file with a different name. Use Edit Video Advanced (aka Video Wave =based on your actual version).

You will have to explain a bit more on what you did or are doing. Do you have the original DVDs even if they are in PAL format?

What do you mean by "I had the same movies that are on those DVDs put on an external harddrive as mpg files"? How was that done?

PLease give us more information.

Thank you both for responding so quickly!

I have Roxio Creator 10, not 12. Sorry about posting in the Roxio Creator 12 forum. I hope you can still help me.

I am using windows 7. My computer is about 1 yr old, has 676 free GB .

My uncle passed away and I took 11 home movies (VHS and S_VHS in the PAL format which he had made and which were not copy protected) to a VHS to DVD conversion studio on Germany. They created the DVDs for me that work in the German region. The technician then created mpg files for me and put them on an external harddrive which I gave him so that I could transport them back to the US. My goal was and is to now put these movies on DVDs that can be viewed in the US region.

I assume you have Roxio Creator 2010 since there is no Roxio Creator 10 (nor Roxio Creator 12)

How mpg files are there? On the DVD is there a folder called Video_TS which contains a number of ifo, bup and vob files?

You need to be specific!

There is a Roxio Creator 2010 and a Easy Media Creator 10.

What one do you have?

I have Roxio Creator 2010.

I followed your suggestion and copied my first DVD to a folder on my hard drive. Then opened the folder and used Edit Video-Advanced to "add" the the Video_TS file. I have 2 chapters on this DVD and saw them listed as Movie 1 and Movie 2. I unclicked movie 2 and only added movie 1. Then I repeated the process to add movie 2. I then saved this production with the two DMSM files/movies. when I went to Create DVD I could add each one of the DSMS files as a separate movie.

I created my new DVD and put it into my DVD player. The movies were there but I could not see any little color blob that normally shows up when there is more than one movie and you can choose the one to open up (because of the color blob). I manually had to move the arrows on my remote control to move between the two movies without seeing that they were even selectable. I then burnt another DVD with a different menu style (thinking that there was a problem with the first style) but I am having the same issue.

Any idea why??? Is there a possibility that working with the Video_TS file is not the answer? Since my initial problem was that only a very small section of the original movie was burnt to the DVD.

Thank you again!

What do you mean by "color blob"? What menu style are you using?

Just to avoid confusion: what your are calling chapters are referred to as "Titles" in video terminolgy. Chapter are "sub-divisions" of a Title (movie) much like the "scene selections" of a movie on commercial DVDs.

BTW, how long in total time is the video you are putting on a DVD?

Sorry about my poor terminology.

Total time of the video I am putting on the DVD is 1:04:03 and 52:50 = 1:56:53

I have used a couple of different menu styles to see if I would have the same problem again. Cruise and Projector

I added both my movies (1 and 2) under "Project View" and then further down under: your title here I hope it makes sense now.

I have convereted VHS tapes to DVD before and followed the same process. If I had, just to give an example, 4 titles listed, burned the DVD and put it into my player, then I could always see which movie was set to play because the coloring of my movie title/description had a different color than the other 3. If I moved the up arrow then the title above would be the one with the different color = selected to play. That's what I meant by 'color blob'.

My problem today has been that nothing highlights/is selected. I have to move the remote control arrow and just see what comes up and where I am in the title sequence. The DVD does play.

I really hope that this clarifies things. I am really stuck! And I hope that one of you can help me figure this out.

Thank you so much!

If you are trying to put both videos on one DVD then no wonder you are having problems.

A standard 4.7GB DVD can only hold 60 minutes of video at the best quality setting. Any longer the video has to be compressed and you lose quality. If you are using the Fit-to-disc quality setting then that will give the worst quality for the length of video you are trying to put on the DVD. It will also corrupt the menu and maybe that is the reason you are having problems there.

I would recommend that you put each movie on its own DVD at the HQ (best) quality setting. That way you will also keep the quality close to the original VHS quality.

In fact I would create each DVD without a menu.

Thank you again!

I know that the best quality can only be reached if there is not more than 60 minutes on a DVD. However, the German DVDs that I brought back were fine, even though there was up to 2 hours on each of them. And interestingly I had no problem opening up the chapters.

I tried to go through the DVD creation process again today using a dual layer DVD and could open up the different titles/chapters when I was finished. So, that's how I will proceed because I really cannot split up each movie.

Thank you again!!

The biggest help was the answer from you about using the Video_TS file, and the thought that the length of my movie may have corrupted the menu.

Some of the other quality settings may also work properly just never use Fit-to-disc. It corrupts the menus for videos > 60 minutes.

Here is a possible solution to your non-highlighting problem.
