I want to copy some family videos. All are 1-4 hours long. How large are the created files? How mant DVDs are needed for 4-6 hours of transferred material>

One hour of source video will give you one DVD when you use the Best quality setting when burning the DVD. Since you are transferring from VHS you will want to keep best quality. Be sure to first capture to your hard drive instead of burning directly to DVD.

Don't worry about size. You can get 1 hour of BEST quality video on a single layer DVD. Less than two hours of video that is so bad you wouldn't want to watch it.

Do you want to watch the videos on a DVD player or just archive them?

There is a BIG difference between a DVD Movie and files saved on a disc...

Files on a disc (data disc) may play on some DVD/BD Players.

Whereas files Authored as a DVD Move WILL Play on all DVD/BD Players!

So which one is it? Of course you can have both, but it requires more discs ;)
