Roxio Creator 2012 Pro - Backontrack

jostros

Question

Computer died and was replaced as we had backups of the important stuff in BOT (BackOnTrack - Roxio Creator 2012 PRO), but as I am seeing on these forums, these may not have offered the protection that was anticipated. We have some 35, 000 pictures that we would really like to get from the backup drive. We can see all the files on the drive, but each file has an associated %%stream file with it, and this seems to mean that the file cannot be copied or read directly. How is it "restored" as the Original creator CD does not a restore program on it - which itself is a tragedy.

Jostros,

You're correct, the Creator 2012 disc does not have a stand-alone Restore program on it.

The %%%stream files are control files for BackOnTrack, which is an integral part of the Creator2012 suite.

If you used any degree of compression on the files as you backed them up, the only way you can restore them is to install the suite again on a computer, and run the "Restore" part of BackOnTrack against your backups.

If you did not use compression on the backup, the files inside can be read and copied off with Windows Explorer, without having to resort to BackOnTrack. However since you haven't been able to do that I guess you compressed them, and I'm afraid you're going to have to install and use BackOnTrack to de-compress them again.

Thanks guys, I did have to re-install the original CD's to get a version that would work. But it finally did. I so much was hoping to find just a simple restore app and not have to install the full app. But at least I recovered the files that they wanted and I guess that was worth the little extra effort.

Glad you caught it early, when you could still install the backup software. :)

I've seen a long, sad procession of good people who hadn't quite thought things through and have backed up to

-media they could no longer read through lack of hardware [tape or disk drive];

-media they could no longer read due to ageing or failure of the media [tape or disc];

-media they could no longer read due to being unable to run the backup/restore software [computer or O.S. 'updating']

Jostros did well, but if you have a backup system in place please think it through to make sure you don't run into one of those problems.
