Mpg File Can't Be Added

Joe Lawrence

Question

Strange happenings. I started creating a new production today using NXT PRO and when I tried to add an mpg video, I got a message pop up saying the video couldn't be edited and it wasn't added to the production. Interestingly, I went back to my laptop where I had left my old version of 12 pro before I upgraded my desktop to NXT PRO, and I had no problem adding the same file there. I have tried over and over to add the file using NXT PRO, but keep getting the same message. If I convert the file to a wmv, it works fine. Please help.

CD, not trying to confusing anything. I already attached the file (in #41) you just asked for. If you are asking for something else, then I am confused. Jim, I can open the 00000 file in both Windows Media Player and WinDVD, and it plays just fine, video and sound. I tried the drag and drop method into videowave, and I get the same problem. One other note, I had thought all was fine using Roxio 12 Pro on my laptop because the file showed up on the timeline just fine, but I just tried to play it and there was no sound with the video. I did short test clips with the DMC FZ200 using the avchd setting, and then again using the mp4 setting: tried both clips, and get the same problem with the test avchd, but the mp4 goes right in to videowave and plays without any problem, both video and sound. So it seems that my problem, across the board, is using the avchd files (with NXT PRO the file can't get into videowave, and with 12 PRO, the file gets in and plays video but not audio).

cd is a little busy but will likely keep up ;)

I think I am seeing 2 issues here and they might be related <_<

One is that your Windows Explorer indicates that you do not have anything it associates for PLAYING mts files...

Your Picture, shown no association but recognizes it as a Movie type file:

If I do the same in mine (large icon view), it shows thumbnails as I have a few Players on mine that are associated with MTS files:

This could indicate that a codec is missing???

You have Windows Media Player as well as the WinDVD that came with NXT.

I want you to try opening both of these Players and doing a Drag and Drop with that file to see if they will play it. ~ This will test to see if the codec is present ^_^

ALSO try doing a Drag & Drop with the MTS file into VidoeWave... I had an earlier version that would crash using "Add" from within VW but was happy to accept one that was "Dropped" into it

Please do those 2 things and let us know the results.

I made a mistake saying avs when I meant mts.

Sooo now we have Windows Explorer "fixed", just VW that crashes on adding the mts files???

Joe, did 'hide extension for know file types' fix your folder view?

If so, why can't you say so and acknowledge it, instead of adding confusion and making me ask meaningless questions about incorrect and meaningless answers!

Yes, the unhide extension made the extension visible. Regarding windows explorer and the video file, I was always able to click on the video file and windows media player would come up and play the file just fine. It was always only the problem with videowave NXT PRO being able to bring the file into the timeline, and recently discovered that VW 12 PRO could bring it in and play only the video not the audio. CD, I'm not sure why you are getting contentious with my responses here, which have always been as responsive as I could be to the questions asked. After this amount of time, it seems clear to me that there is no easy fix to the problem I'm having, and maybe there is not even a hard fix. But I've got to move on. I appreciate all the attempts to help me and I understand that you guys try to help on your own time with no reward except for the gratitude of those of us who have less knowledge about these things than do you, and perhaps your own sense of satisfaction of being able to help another person. At this point, to get the job done I need to get done, I'm going to work with windows movie maker, and then come back to uninstall and reinstall the NXT PRO. I'll continue to monitor this in case some one has a new inspiration. Thank you all again for your attempts to help.

Some of your replies have been, lacking full information... That can be a bit frustrating ;)

If I may suggest a Complete repair process for NXT. We usually reserve this for the most stubborn issues but I think we might as well assume yours will meet that requirement

Download and install the
Uninstaller. Then run it in
Moderate Mode
to remove any traces of Roxio.

Create a New User Account with Administrator Privileges.

Turn OFF any A/V & Firewall.

Reboot and log on to that new account.

Copy your entire disc to a new folder on your HDD.

In that new folder, right click on Setup.exe and select Properties.

Under the Compatibility tab, make sure
nothing
is checked!

Right click Setup.exe and select Open.

Allow it to Check for Updates (this is for Roxio not Windows)

Use the Default Locations!

See what that will do for you!

As I was able to add the 00000.mts file in C2012 and play both video and audio correctly that would indicate that there is nothing wrong with C2012. The problem may be in your system which might carry over to Roxio NXT.

OK, I did another "repair" of the installation -- ran very quickly and seemed to change nothing. The problem in "add" still exists. what I meant by the different file extensions was: when I do properties in windows explorer, the video is clearly identified as an avchd file with an .MTS extension. When I do an "add" in videowave, the file icons say "MPEG file" (but properties still say avchd)so I didn't understand why the icons are identified as mpeg.

Could you show a screenshot of what you see in Windows Explorer and Videowave Properties?

Well, I installed the directx file that CD sent the link for, and sad to say, I still have the problem. It seems sadder when I hear that others seem able to get my uploaded video file into their NXT production. I have to get these vacation pics and vids put neatly into a DVD, and maybe I'll just have use Windows Movie Maker and then uninstall NXT PRO and reinstall at a later time. Anyone have any other ideas of what I can check? (Can someone say why the NXT program identifies the avchd vile as an mpeg?)

That is why I don't use up4down  With 4Shared (despite the dog-poo and minefield) I had it within minutes.

Well, embarrassed to admit, I already had registered there (years ago) and it did only take a couple of minutes to download from there

I DID have to Turn OFF the MS SmartScreen Filter as it blocked any downloads from that site :P

But I got the file and like CD had no issue whatsoever loading it into VW...

I hope Joe tries the fix CD provided ;)

Did the repair, firewall off. Thought I had something for a minute. The setup detected directx 9 which it said was incompatible and removed it. It went through the repair process. Nothing changed. Same message....file can't be edited so not added.

Download and install this from Microsoft. Roxio won't work without it.
