Video_Ts Conversion - Poor Quality

Hi

 

I've got some home videos recorded from my Sony Handycam that I wanted to convert from the Video_TS folder so that I can edit the videos in iMovie or any other editing software. I've tried using Toast and Handbrake etc but I'm not getting the same quality as the original source. The videos are of sporting action with a ball moving at high speeds, which plays fine with the original Video_TS files but when I convert it doesn't result in the same smooth movement of the ball as it did in the original and is a little bit patchy. The conversion is decent but not quite good enough.

 

Would appreciate any help with the issue and is there any way I can convert those videos for editing with perfect quality?

Choose QuickTime Movie as the conversion format and then click the "Change..." button next to Quality. Next, click the Settings button in the window that appears. At the top of the next window click Compression Type and choose Apple Intermediate Codec from the popup list. Leave everything else the same. Do not click the Interlaced box even though the source video is interlaced.

 

When you return to the Toast window where you selected QuickTime Movie as the format, click the Preview button to see how this looks to you. Or you can do a test with a minute or two of an action sequence rather than the entire video. If you're still not pleased try selecting the interlaced box.

But I'm still getting the same sort of result with your settings as I did previously. Also the dimensions have reduced to 640x480 from 768x576. Could you recommend any other solutions?

That's an odd size. My understanding is that PAL resolution is 720x576. Maybe that is one of the reasons for the conversion difficulty. I didn't think Apple Intermediate Codec would change the resolution. My alternate recommendation is to choose DVCPRO50-PAL as the Compression Type, set the quality setting to High or Best, choose Progressive as the scan mode and set the aspect ratio to whichever is correct for your video.

I'm very puzzled why you're seeing hardly any difference at all. The standard-definition MPEG 2 inside the VIDEO_TS is rather mediocre to begin with and it shouldn't be hard to make a conversion that is very similar. I've given you the best solutions that I'm aware of. Sorry. Maybe there is someone at videohelp.com that has a better solution.
