Black frame around my video

I am back trying to make my videos after a little break. (Too frustrated!)

 

I have loads of video files from my Sony MiniDVD cam and I am trying to make a video in 9:16. My videos are in 9:16 and even though I selected the widescreen it makes the video in the 4:3 format with a black frame around the video. What am I doing wrong? I imported the videos in AVI.

Thank for the link, I did a search but am so confused I don't even know how to look! After going to the link I am still confused but I have moved my question to that thread.
