justin.coll
Can anyone with the new version 9 comment on the PSP support it now boasts, and how well it works? ggrussell
Does it manage files on the PSP? Does it size images for perfect viewing on the PSP screen? As far as I know, EMC9 does not interface directly with the PSP. YOu will have to use the Sony software for that. I don't know about still images, but Videowave does support output to several PSP quality modes.
Kevin J
As far as I know, EMC9 does not interface directly with the PSP. Not true. EMC9 Disc Copier can both transfer video from the PSP and transfer to the PSP, no Sony software necessary. With no other software installed other than Roxio EMC9, I connected the PSP to my laptop without installing any Sony software and I trasnferred TV episodes from MPEG1 format to the PSP via the disc copier within a few minutes. It was very quick and simple. Once the video was transferred, I then browsed to the PSP via Disc Copier and then transferred an episode from the PSP back to the PC. Playback on the PSP uses the largest playback area possible on the screen and looks actually very good, since the screen resolution at that size is perfect for the small resolution it converts to. I see no reason to install the Sony software, Roxio does everything I'd want to do.
John at Roxio
The catch though is that if you have the new firmware for the PSP, there is a trick to get it to work. Here is our KB article
Janimal
There is one problem though if you convert to MPEG-4 (as suggested in the KB article) vs the PSP preset: The compression seems to be inferior. For the PSP preset I am able to fit a 90 minute movie on a 256MB memory stick and under Content Quality it says 'GOOD'. If I pick MPEG-4 instead of PSP (as outlined in the KB article) I get a message that compression is not possible for 256MB. If I pick 512MB memory stick then I get the 'Content Quality: GOOD'. To be honest, I think it is not acceptable that Roxio advertises that EMC 9 can convert to PSP and then it doesn't even work if you updated your PSP firmware (remember... the firmware is out longer than EMC 9). Instead you need a work-around that decreases compression rate which means that you need to buy larger flash storage for the same quality. I think that Roxio should roll out an update that is able to work with the new PSP firmware (2.8). I should have gone with a standalone PSP converter instead of EMC 9 because that is the feature I was most looking forward to. Other software is able to fit a 90 minute movie on 256MB with the same quality that EMC 9 does on a 512MB stick.
John at Roxio
To be honest, I think it is not acceptable that Roxio advertises that EMC 9 can convert to PSP and then it doesn't even work if you updated your PSP firmware (remember... the firmware is out longer than EMC 9). It takes months after a product has the feature set complete to release it. If you keep making changes here and there, you just set yourself up for more and more delays. Janimal
I just (actually it was last night) tried converting to MPEG-4 as described in that KB article, moved the file to my psp but I still could not play it. I have FW 2.8 on my PSP and followed the KB article step by step. I could see the file on the PSP but whenever I want to start it, I get the message that the video cannot be played. I even moved it between folders. Any solution?
SimonF
The catch though is that if you have the new firmware for the PSP, there is a trick to get it to work. Here is our KB article Hi I have v2.81 software on my PSP and cant get any converted TV to run. I have tried the method described in the KB article and the PSP shows 'Unsupported Data' in place of the video title. If I use the PSP option on the format dropdown list it copies the titles and thumbnail image fine, but the PSP says 'This video cannot be played'. Any ideas? This was one of the reasons I purchased EMC 9. Thanks Simon
ggrussell
The KB article mentions to use the MPEG4 instead of the PSP output option. Did you try both formats? You may want to try using Videowave, too. There are a few more options in the file output.

However, Videowave seems to be the answer in my case. I managed to copy a short piece of TV over to the PSP fine. Thanks again Simon

PAULHEARN
The catch though is that if you have the new firmware for the PSP, there is a trick to get it to work. Here is our KB article Hey John; Just upgraded my PSP firmware to 2.71 and I followed the KB article to a tee but no luck in transfering a video to the PSP with the MPEG4 selection. In fact when I select MPEG4 the PSP output option is not available - even with the PSP USB connected. If I save the MPEG4 option to disk and try to manually transfer the file using explorer still no luck. I had no problem with previous PSP firmware. Any suggestions.
