Can't Install Update To Toast Titanium 11.1

dan McCarter

Question

When I try to download the update from the toast program itself i get an error -- "update Error The Update is Improperly signed." So I downloaded the update from the support website and got this error--"Install Toast 11.pkg" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

Any Help would be appreciated

Thanks

Dan

Do you think Corel/Roxio support team monitors this forum? I'm not going to go into their lack of customer support - there's plenty about that already posted. But "Update Error the update is Improperly signed" should be their responsibility to fix. IF they are aware of it.

Digital Guru's tip about tweaking System Preferences to chose "Install from Anywhere" sounded so promising, but sad to say did not work. Thanks for trying, and I will surely let you know if that or anything else works. At the moment I'm just running Toast 11.1 without updating.

I don't think anyone from Corel/Roxio looks at the forums unless a moderator (e.g. me) asks for their intervention. And then I'm not sure if anyone will show. Toast is not something in the forefront of their minds (written with great understatement). There is, however, a link to report bugs and feature requests that I've pinned near the top of the forum. Their form indicates that it actually goes somewhere.

Your error is different that what I and anyone else has experienced. We get a message about it not being a known developer. I'll see if I can find any info about working around the "improperly signed" error and will send a private message to the one person I still know at Corel to look into this.

I found one possibility. Rename your existing Toast 11 Titanium folder to something else (maybe just add the word "old". Now try installing the new one. It may be that you encountered a permissions error that prevented writing over the existing folder.

There are a couple of issues with this update (when using the "Check for Updates" function from WITHIN Toast).

The first symptom occurs right after download (still within Toast) where the dialog usually displays the "ReadMe" file for the update, instead it only contains what appears to be the end of a sentence, "file not found.""

The second issue is that Toast's built-in update code is reporting the downloaded file as improperly signed.

NOTE that the file Toast downloads for the update is only around 92MB in size versus about 390MB for the full download via the website. Either this is only a patch file, or something has been corrupted/truncated on their update server, which would explain a lot.

I have just submitted a "product defect report" through the well hidden online form (if anybody at Corel still reads this) as follows:

Toast 11.2 update error / corrupt?

Toast 11.1 (1072)

Mac OSX 10.8

When Toast 11.1 (1072) attempts to update using the "check for updates" function, dialog reports update available 11.2 (3175). Readme displayed in the update dialog only contains the text "file not found.""

Clicking on "Install Update" initiates download, but then raises an error dialog as follows: "Update Error! The update is improperly signed." The only option offered is to "Cancel Update". Multiple download attempts, same result.

Received the auto reply from Corel support:

"... Our product experts will investigate and determine if the issue warrants scheduling in a future update/release. We will contact you if more information is required."

Not holding breath. ;-)

Running mac OSX 10.9.1, I got the same error message ("Update Error the update is Improperly signed") while trying to install the Toast 11.2 update. I have 11.1 currently installed. The MD5 result I get for the downloaded Toast_11_Titanium_3175.dmg file is 24aa35a9eda59c22c0a1e8dfdaf1d15c (note this for the 399MB install file, not for the smaller update file).

When I opened System Preferences... >> Security & Privacy >> General panel, there was a message below "Allow apps downloaded..." regarding the Toast 11 installation attempt and a button to continue. [i am describing from memory since it no longer is visible.] Clicking the button results in a dialog pop-up requesting admin authorization (since my routine user account is not an admin). Granting permission with an admin password then results in a successful installation/update with all the expected windows and events.

This update did not even require a click on the lock icon in System Preferences... to make changes. My settings for "...apps downloaded from:" remained unchanged, set as "Mac App Store and identified developers".

I also have a Mac Mini Server running OS X 10.8.5 with the same update issue--"... improperly signed" dialog popup and failed install. In that case, no message appears in the System Preferences... >> Security & Privacy >> General panel. I had to unlock to make changes, set "Allow apps downloaded from:" to "Anywhere". Then the small 92MB update file from within Toast 11.1 "Check Updates..." process still failed. I had to run the "Install Toast 11.pkg" found inside Toast_11_Titanium_3175.dmg for the update to succeed. I then restored my original "Allow apps downloaded from:" setting.

FYI, the window that opens when the dmg is mounted doesn't look like most installation window images, but I ignored that and seem to have suffered no consequences.

Toast 11.2 is running as expected on both my Mavericks and Mountain Lion Server platforms now.

I hope this is helpful to someone else facing the same issues.

Another method to overcome this issue using Mac OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks without opening all updates from anywhere is to download the update directly from Roxio support web site and then open the downloaded file. When the *.dmg file is mounted hold down the CONTROL key and click on the Install Pkg. This will open a menu from which you select OPEN or OPEN WITH (default Installer) and the install will override the error message for this install only. After it is installed all should work okay. One would think that since this update is to make Toast compatible with Mavericks, Roxio would test it once to see that the install works as expected!

Go to the Security & Privacy panel in System Preferences. There you'll see how to allow Toast's installer to be launched by allowing apps to be installed from anywhere. You can change it back after running the Toast installer.

Go here for info:

You have to use the default Mac browser (Safari) and download it from their site. I think you also have to register the original product. It work on my Maverick 10.9.1

I was able to update to the latest Toast update. I was hoping I would get a new updated version of spin doctor but sadly that didn't happen. I am still using spin doctor in Toast 10

I'm pretty sure Roxio abandoned further Spin Doctor X development. A real piece of garbage.

Hi Digital Guru

I've got the same problem as AKosh

I get the same error message ("Update Error the update is Improperly signed"), while trying to install the Toast 11.2 update.

I have 11.1 currently installed.

Although I am running mac OSX 10.6.8

When I go to System Preferences

Security

I can't find how to alter it so that I can install apps from anywhere

Can you help?

Regards

I got this delightfully unhelpful error today when trying to update. I already had my security settings in System Prefs to always allow downloaded apps from 'anywhere' and the error message is actually different to some of the Mavericks 'errors' that you get (when system prefs > security is set to Mac apps and Identified developers only), which definitely points the finger toward a Roxio issue. Very poor form from them. post-117627-0-71954400-1391430951_thumb.png

Simply going to the link - http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/toast/software_updatesv11.html and then downloading meant it seemingly installed properly but then would not start on two occasions with the 'application not responding' message and me having to force quit. Then after quitting the second time a Mavericks message popped up saying Toast wanted to access my contacts. I denied this request and then eventually the install went through and I'm now using 11.2...

If the above doesn't work, I'm sure that instructions helpfully from FastEddie2 would work.

In the Security panel of System Preferences choose the General tab. Click the padlock and enter your administrator password to allow changes to be made. In the bottom part of the window there is "Allow apps downloaded from..." Choose "Anywhere." Toast's installer should work. Corel should fix this but I'm not holding my breath.
