Very Slow File Operations

Delboy

Question

I upgraded from Roxio 12 because for a while now (using videowave) I have found that when add photos or videos it takes forever to load the file list. In fact this happens with any kind of file operation. It takes video wave 50 seconds to open.

I upgraded as the promo says the latest version is 10 times faster but there is no difference. In fact I can't see anything difference between the 2012 and nxt2 so I am wondering what I have paid for.

PC

Windows 7 x32

4mb Ram

INtel core 2 Duo CPU E700 @ 2.79 GHz

ATI Radeon HD 4550 (latest Driver)

Disk 0% defragmented

I agree with Jim the NXt and NXT 2 versions are a "downgrade" from C2012. .

The promo does not say it is 10x faster (faster then what?) but only that it is "up to 10x times faster when rendering" and does not apply to opening the program etc.. That claim is mostly marketing hype and will of course depend a lot on your hardware. Your CPU is not the fastest and most likely your GPU is not much better.

I agree with Jim and Walt about the downgrade from Creator 2012.

I'm wondering if you have your software set to 'monitor' your file operations or 'watch folders'. If you have a large number of drives and/or folders and/or files, monitoring or 'folder watching' software can make file operations like wading through thigh-deep, cold molasses.

In addition to the other suggestions that were made (which I totally agree with)one thing you might do if not already doing it. When making a production in the "Videowave" program, make sure that all the files that you are using in the production (photos, music and video) are all in the same location or folder on your computer. The program then only has to go to that one folder to get all the files for the production. Also when you save your production, save it to this same folder.

Not sure if Brendon's suggestion is the same but also try this to make the computer in your programs run faster---

Go to START--Then RUN--In the open box enter MSCONFIG, click OK then click on the SERVICES (Tab) and cursor down to

the box that says ROXIO HARD DRIVE WATCHER and uncheck that box. Then reboot.

Apologies to Brendon if this is the same as he suggested.

The slow opening (20 seconds) of the file dialox box happens even when I start a new project so it is not looking for any files and there is no folder watching. I have a lot of programs on my computer and Roxio is the only one I have this problem with. All the other programs open files instantly

Other than this problem my computer is running perfectly well.

If you're monitoring folders, a new project will prompt the software to check those folders and you'll suffer the delay..

If the delay is caused by Roxio checking folders, then only Roxio operations will be delayed. You can expect all other programs on your computer to be unaffected, and to open files instantly.

-That's pretty much what's happening, isn't it?

Check and see if Roxio Media Manager is monitoring folders. Hit Tools >Browse and Manage Media [Roxio Media Manager will open]

post-208-0-80760700-1391164816_thumb.jpg

Click "Select Monitored Folders"

post-208-0-01061700-1391164882_thumb.jpg

In the Monitored Folder Settings box

-uncheck the 'Start Folder Monitoring' checkbox

-click the 'Clear All' button

-uncheck the three boxes, Monitor folders at startup, Show Notifications on startup, and Filter small files

-click on OK to put the box away.

When you've done all those things, folder monitoring is off.

Be aware that if you now open the Monitored Folder Settings box to check, the Start folder monitoring box will be automatically checked again, and you'll be back on the slippery slide trying to turn the durn thing off once more.

Regards,

Brendon

You were right the media manager was enabled but after disabling it and rebooting my pc there is no change. I do have a huge collection of photos and videos but it wasn't watching that anyway, just the default "my documents" media folders which are empty.

I remember many years ago this media watcher always causing problems so I would always turn it off as soon as it was installed. It does feel like it is something to do with that. I also tried turning off the RoxioMediadb15 service (whatever that is) but that has made no difference.

What on earth is happening at Roxio. Charging for a downgrade and not sorting out a utility that didn't work 10 years ago.

We are going to have to try a more extensive repair...

Download and install the
Uninstaller. Then run it in
Moderate Mode
to remove any traces of Roxio.

Turn OFF any A/V & Firewall.

Allow it to Check for Updates (this is for Roxio not Windows)

Use the Default Locations!

After install, turn ON you’re A/V & Firewall, then Reboot.

First thing after reboot start Roxio and Turn Off the Monitored Folders as Brendon indicated in Post #8.

Anywhere along the line, If it asks you to let it look for pictures, video, music, etc. DON'T Allow It!

Also as soon as you start VideoWave go to Tools - Options - Render and set it to Software! (it always defaults to hardware)

thanks for trying but I did all that and there virtually no difference. It is now 15 seconds to open a file dialog box instead of instantly as every other program does. The whole program seems to run slow as it even takes 10 seconds to option the options in videowave.

Corel (same company) Video Studio has a free trial version. Yes, the programs are complex so the computer must be in tip top shape and the program needs to be installed properly.

Also remember that Creator is a very large program and there are many processes and dynamic linked libraries that must be started/run.

I downloaded Powerdirector and as with every other program on my computer the dialogue box opened instantly. How can it not be the software? It used to work ok on my machine up to a couple of months ago but now it doesn't and it feels very much like the folder watching problem.

Remember that that program is Video Editing ONLY and not the full function applications that Creator has.

"If it worked up to a couple of months ago and now doesn't" then it is obvious that you have changed something on your system that interferes with the program or your settings are wrong.

I am a retired IT pro with 25 years experience in IT. I did try giving videowave with a higher priority but it made no difference other than making my pc unusable. The problem seems to me that the program is looking for something and I only get the file dialogue box when the request has timed out. Strangely enough I was able to work with the software when instead of using the "add video" button I put all the media files in one place and used the media selector on the right side. Browsing there was perfectly acceptable.

However as I want to start doing more video editing I bought a new PC and although it is much faster I still find videowave very flaky and is constantly crashing. This morning I drag and dropped a file into the timeline and it crashed. Sometimes the play button on the video playback dissapears so I have to close the program and open it again. If I am working on a video where I split it many times sometimes after a spilt the program hangs and I have to force the program to close losing my work. I save often but even with this new pc it still loads and saved very slowly. All this is on a clean build

In short I don't believe this is reliable software and as established in the thread I have just paid money for downgrade and can't see any new features or improvements. it is certianly not "10 times faster" I will be looking around for something else although so far have not had much luck.
