Help! Toast Shuts Down Around 78% Of Writing Phase- Error Code

HI,

I uploaded all of our iPhone and digital camera videos to iMovie and edited them to create a home movie. When I try to use Toast to burn onto a disk, it takes forever to encode everything, then shuts down after 78% in the writing phase. I'm using a macbook pro with the most recent Mavericks software. This is incredibly frustrating, because in addition to taking FOREVER, it leaves me with a bunch of dvds that I need to throw out, because they're only half written. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

 

It's giving me this error message : The drive reported an error:

Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST

Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05

CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT

I understand the frustration. Whenever you use Toast for a project that requires encoding choose Save as Disc Image instead of clicking the burn button. That way the process of burning the disc is entirely separate. In your case Toast should have kept the encoded files in the Roxio Converted Items folder in your Documents folder as long as you didn't quit Toast. You can make sure Toast doesn't automatically erase those files by changing a setting in Toast preferences. If the encoded files are there Toast shouldn't need to encode them again.

 

But choosing Save as Disc Image eliminates that worry. When the disc image is finished select the resulting .toast file using the Image File setting in the Toast Copy window. Now burn the disc. The error you're getting could be due to defective media. What brand of discs are you using? It may help to change to Verbatim discs if those aren't what you're using now. It could be some other problem but changing the brand of discs is one thing to test.

Thanks... so you think that the error I'm getting is due to the blank discs I'm using? They're Sony DVD-R. If it's not the dvds I'm using, what else could it be?

Also, just to clarify, the first part of your reply was a suggestion to cut down on the encoding time, not fix the error message, correct?

The error may be due to the discs but that's not certain. My suggestion to Save as Disc Image does not cut down on encoding time but it assures you only need to do that once even if something goes wrong with the disc burning.
