Feeling Very Cheated By Toast 11

xrats

Question

I've used Toast for a long time, overall I've been happy with the program. But I just upgraded to a Blu Ray burner and my old version doesn't support it. So I came here, looked at the Toast 11 page for a while, it says all over the site that it burns Blu Rays. So I go ahead and upgrade. I install it, go to burn my 1st Blu Ray and I'm instantly asked to buy a Blu Ray plug-in for another $20. That's not mentioned anywhere I can see... but I see plenty of places that it says it'll burn Blu Rays. I'm guessing that their vague wording actually means it'll burn data Blu Rays and not playable movie Blu Rays... but I'm not seeing any astricks next to where it says burns Blu Rays.

I'm extremely displeased! You have to make that very clear to the buyer that you'll have to shell out another $20 to get the full benefits, that are very implied on your website, in the original purchase. I can't possibly be the first person to run into this problem.

Did you buy it from Roxio? If so there is a 30-day refund. What you should have bought is Toast 11 Pro because that includes the Blu-ray plugin and several bonus applications. It's a very good deal. Roxio sent me promotional email this week offering Toast 11 Pro for $79.99 Here's a link.

Yeah, bought it through the Roxio website. I guess I'll ask for a refund. Not sure I want to give them anymore of my money though, since they can't bother to get back to me about this. I'm just really displeased by their very sneaky way getting more money out of us.

How did you contact Roxio about your "problem"? I don't see anything sneaky if you don't do a proper research on what you are bying

I'm sorry you feel you were duped by their product description. As you discovered the Blu-ray plugin add-on is needed in order to author a Blu-ray format video disc. The same was true when Toast first provided Blu-ray authoring with Toast 10. Back then Toast introduced what it called the "Pro" version which not only included the Blu-ray plugin but other third-party apps. Toast, itself, is the same with either the standard or Pro version. For those not interested in buying the Pro version Roxio offered the plugin as a $20 standalone purchase. Maybe it was more clear back when they were selling Toast 10. Sorry.

Gee, I wonder why I got the impression that it burns Blu-rays...

http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/default.html?rTrack=m_pro_toast - "Burn CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray discs..." (This is under the Titanium listing not the Pro)

http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html "Toast is the easiest and fastest way to burn your digital media on to CD, DVD or BLU RAY for both Mac and PC."

http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/burn.html "The easiest fastest way to burn CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs"

http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/capture.html "...Create stunning Blu-ray video or HD DVD discs..." - Here, I finally see their astricks (on my 10th visit to the page) for the plug-in.

I emailed them about it over 24hours ago.. i know that's not a ton of time, but I'm used to customer service on other sites getting back to me much quicker.

The first three links are correct (although misleading) since the burn only applies to burning data not video/

It is confusing that Blu-ray can mean either a type of disc media or a video format (and sometimes both). Just to make your decision more difficult, you should know that it is a pain in the &%$ to create a Blu-ray video because of extremely long encoding times unless your source video is already in MPEG 2 format (such as is the case with a TiVo Transfer). There are much easier and better ways to play your home HD videos on your HDTV. Creating a Blu-ray video disc only makes sense if you are planning to send it to others to play on their Blu-ray players. I'm telling you this because I don't want you to feel angry should you buy the plugin or the Pro version and not be prepared for how very long it takes to make one of those discs.

Yeah, I realize this. I'm a filmmaker and I've got to send out some Blu Rays to a film festival... as of late they usually take HD downloads, which are much easier to deal with. I've got my film all converted to MPEG 2 format, went to plug it into Toast 11 and try to burn a Blu Ray, that's when I discovered the issue. I'm trying to get a refund now. I may upgrade to the Pro version if I can't find another way to make the Blu Rays.

I agre with xrats isb so far i have also found Roxio's infor mislerading on several occazsions. However once I got the drift of thier programs, I have very good success, and as stated by tsantee, Toast 11 Pro for $79.99 is a pretty good price. I've been using Toast 11Pro for a few years, and this is my 2nd upgrade. I wasn't aware that there was a 30 day refund when I bought Toast 10, so I ended up in xrat's predicament a few years back: the proud owner of Toast 10 Titanium and Toast 10 Pro Titanium. Better clarigfication in Roxio's web site would be helpful, since we were probably not the only 2 people to get burnt.

Well I just encountered the same misleading marketing ploys and thought I was getting a blu ray burning package - only to find I needed to buy an extra plug in. Why can't organisations just be straight with people? I can't be bothered asking for a refund, I have a film festival deadline to meet. I won't get bogged down over a matter of $20…life is too short. Spend my extra 20 bucks wisely...
