Vhs 2 Dvd 3 Problem - Split From Unrelated, Hijacked Thread

salski

Question

OK, guys, I'll give my question a shot even tho I don't know what PAL or ntsc refers to. I just bought Roxio Easy VHS to DVD3 with the intention of copying half of my family movies to DVD. The other half are mini DV tapes which I thought I would have to find a different way of transferring. But, in reading this thread and browsing your forum it appears that I might be able to use the Roxio software, I'm just not sure if I have the right cables to make this work. It seems like I might be able to find a firewire (or iLink) to USB cable somewhere, that would do it. My Sony Handycam DCR-HC30 is very old and my daughter seems to have lost the AC cable. I don't really want to spend a ton of money buying new cables for it, I just want to find a way to copy my existing tapes. Any ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated!!

You are going to have to spend some money to be able to capture your videos. You will need a Firewire cable to capture from the miniDV tapes as well as a Firewire port on your computer and the correct drivers. There is really no such thing as a Firewire to USB cable. The VHS2DVD 3 package should include the USB cables required to capture the analog video from the VHS camcorder/player. You will of course need the AC power cable to run the camcorder.

Some things to note...

The EVD 3 software has NO provision to capture anything unless it is from the USB when it is connected to the Capture Device! (no provision for firewire!)

The device only captures from Composite Video (Yellow RCA) or S-Video (separate audio needed then)

Dig around, you will likely find that your camcorder has a plug and wires that will meet those - usually for TV playback ;)

If you go the firewire route, you will need a PC Card for the firewire AND different software, such as one of the Creator NXT series.
