How To Fix Heavy Aliasing On Subtitle Text?

kvi

Question

I'm using Avid DVD (Sonic's DVDit) and I've tried numerous typefaces for subtitles but have yet to find one that presents without heavy aliasing. The subtitling is on mostly short form SD projects with maximum quality compression settings. Has anyone found a font that works best, or a way to improve the quality of the subtitle text?

I'm afraid you may be misinformed. Avid DVD was developed by the Sonic Corp which is NOT the same as Sonic Solutions.

Where did you get the information that AVID was the same as DVDIt? DVDit was a pretty high priced program designed to do primarily DVD menus. Tell us more.

"Avid DVD by Sonic" (as it is always titled) was indeed developed by Sonic Solutions.

Looking at the details of the aptly titled "Avid DVD by Sonic" application executable file I find that the application is copyrighted 2010 by Sonic Solutions. See the attached screen capture.

Also, the screen captures and instructions in the "Roxio" User's Guide for DVDit Pro HD match (for all intents and purposes) the "Avid DVD by Sonic" manual.

sknis,

I appreciate your efforts, but your initial reply incorrectly stated the OEM of the Avid DVD by Sonic application. How then do you feel competent in responding to this query?

Just because there are keyword hits for Avid DVD doesn't imply that any are related to the aliasing issue.

I have explored the Avid forums without results. By the way, there is no forum specific to Avid DVD by Sonic. Since this is the forum for the source of the application I hoped to find greater depth of experiential information related to the product.

As I stated, the users manuals are for all intents and purposes identical. What other Sonic (Roxio) product could this be?

So far you have provided no relevant information, only misinformation. Please do not fill this topic with more.

Sorry ogdens,

Not even close. That link refers to text and graphics created within the Avid editig application. I'm referring to the "subtitles" created within DVDit.

The subtitles generated by DVDit are grossly aliased to the point of being unacceptable for professional program delivery. I recently lost a subtitling job for this very reason.

kvi,

from the lack of responses you are getting you can see that few posters use that program especialyl since it is no longer supported by Roxio/Sonic/Corel or whoever. I don't think it is even produced anymore

Regarding the aliasing problem, I assume you have done an extensive google search on "dvdit 6 subtitle format". There are lots of hits.

Walt,

Unfortunately while there are hits for the keywords you selected, there aren't any that deal with the subitle font aliasing issue.

sknis,

Since you seem unable or unwilling to accept that Avid DVD by Sonic is indeed Sonic DVDit Pro, let me provide you with an assortment of URLs that will hopefully enlighten you... Mr. Guru

KVI, When it comes down to the bottom line, you will not get a satisfactory answer on these forums to the original question you posted about text issues with a more than 14 year old program from whomever developed it. Walt and I have been trying to point you to alternate sources for your answer but you seem to be focusing on who (developed the program) rather than HOW to fix the issue. IF someone else would have an answer, then they would have posted one by now.

Good luck in getting a satisfactory answer; I hope you do.

sknis,

I posted on THIS forum as it is THE forum for DVDit Pro. I'm not sure where you get the 14+ year old age of the application. Based on the date of the users guide I presented above the HD version was updated as recently as 2006.

The suggestions provided so far were to a forum that didn't relate to the DVDit application and several (entirely too broad) keyword searches that clearly no one bothered to review before suggesting them as they generated not a single hit for the issue.

Your claim that I am focused on who developed the program is utter nonsense, totally baseless and makes me wonder in what state of reality you reside. You are the one who proclaimed that Avid DVD by Sonic wasn't DVDit Pro. In fact you persisted in subverting this thread with this claim. I simply provided you with proof to the contrary to ensure that anyone browsing this topic in the future wasn't misled by your completely false statements.

In reality sknis you haven't provided a single bit of helpful information. As I stated in an earlier posting, you have only provided misinformation.

I've been using a variety of Sonic products since the early 2000's starting with ReelDVD, unfortunately it appears that due to a lack of product support this relationship has come to an end.

If anyone has something substantive and relevant to the topic to add please post it for the sake of those who choose to continue to use DVDit. In the meantime I'll be switching to an alternate application to fulfill my future subtitling needs. Best wishes to all.
