Capture Mode Buzzing Sound

Elricsfate

Question

I have the Gamecap HD Pro connected to my XBox360 via HDMI cable. I have no issues in the living room. Sound and picture from the tv and surround sound are fine. But when I fire up the software in the office and turn on capture mode, there is a buzzing noise. This buzzing noise is captured in my videos, and it is annoying. Has anyone experienced this, and if so were you able to resolve it?

Thanks in advance.

Something possibly causing an electrical disturbance in your office?

As I said, the RGC is connected to my XBox 360 via HDMI. It is connected to my Mitsubishi DLP television via HDMI. Sound from my XBox 360 goes directly to my A/V receiver via optical cable. The USB connection from the computer in the office goes through the wall seperating the office from the living room and in to the RGC. I have tried every possible combination of cabling solutions. When I switch from HDMI to component cabling the buzz goes away. However, the colors displayed on the television set are messed up, with everything having a green tint to it.

I have literally spent the better part of 4 days on my stomach in the floor hooking up cables and unhooking them, trying to find a solution to this problem. If you would like to hear the sound of which I speak it can be heard in the following video which I recorded.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNn7x86cnZo You

You will also note if you look carefully as the notes pass, that the video and audio are out of synch ever so slightly.

I have grown weary of messing with this device, and I have requested a refund. Whether they grant me one or not, I am going to buy a different device from a different manufacturer. Having spent $119 +shipping, and then spending an additional $100+ on "quality" cables in an attempt to eliminate what I assume is electrical interference, I am done. My best guess is that there is some problem with the RGC's HDMI port, as I do not hear this sound on my television or my A/V unit unless this device is plugged in.

I just want to plug in a device and record myself playing games, specifically Rocksmith 2014 right now. I am not interested in getting a degree in electronics and/or rewiring my house in order to make this device do what it is supposed to do...

By the way, just for informational purposes, I am not an initiate when it comes to these types of things. I have been gaming for years. I have owned this XBox and this television and this A/V receiver, all working fine, for more than 5 years. I work in IT. I spent the better part of 5 years doing cabling and infrastructure. I understand how to connect devices. I also understand that the sound I am hearing is likely electrical interference. But since this decice is designed with the purpose of being connected to a gaming system, a television and a computer simultaneously, one would assume that the manufacturer would assume there might be some electricity around it, and design accordingly.

It is possible I simply got a defective unit. We will know for sure shortly. If I buy a different device, from a different company, and get the same result...then the problem is on my end and I will have to either give up on recording my gameplay, or make some kind of major change to the way things are set up.

a defective unit that is only defective in one room in your house???

Sure

The problem is most likely either the un-boosted length of your HDMI or within the outlet of that room.

The fact that it goes away if you use Component sure makes the HDMI suspicious...

An extension cord to your PC from an outlet on a Different Circuit would test one possible issue...

We're obviously not communicating. It's not "only defective in one room of my house". It is connected to the XBox in the room the XBox is in. And it makes a freakin humming noise. One imagines it would not make that noise if it were, for example, connected to the toilet in my bathroom. But since it is an electronic device, hooked (as directed by the manufacturer) to other electronic devices, it is obviously not functioning properly.

The only cable that is of any unusual length is the USB A to B that powers the unit.

The RGC, XBOX, Television and A/V receiver are all sitting on the same entertainment center, and connected with standard 3ft hdmi cables. The USB A to B runs through the wall to a computer in another room, and is 25 feet long. However, if the problem was interference on the usb line, then I should get the same buzzing sound when I connect the RGC to the tv and XBox via component cable as well. And I don't.

The situation could be resolved easily if the component cable didn't put out such a crappy picture. But it does. Which is another thing that leads me to believe that the unit itself is defective.

As far as the extension cord goes, that is a possibility. I have no idea if these devices are on the same circuit, as the PC is in one room and everything else is in another. But that gets a bit complicated because I have all manner of stuff connected in this room. Printer, modem, router, speakers, etc.

Like I said, if another device does the same thing, then I'll know for sure that it isn't the device.

I do appreciate you taking the time to try to help out. I'm just seriously tired of messing with this thing. So I apologize if I am coming off a bit snippy.

Obviously you are not communicating your problem very well

From your first post:

"I have the Gamecap HD Pro connected to my XBox360 via HDMI cable. I have no issues in the living room. Sound and picture from the tv and surround sound are fine. But when I fire up the software in the office and turn on capture mode, there is a buzzing noise"

So has is that a problem with the software or device?

I am not sure how much more clear I can be about how this thing is connected. There are in fact only two ways to connect it, and I have stated that I tried both. The physical location of the Xbox versus the computer from which the RGC draws power and send the video to via the USB connection isn't really relevant.

My point in saying I have no problem in the living room was to say that when the device is connected and I am watching the television, or playing my Xbox, I do not hear or see any problems. It is when I turn on capture mode and sit down at my computer in the other room that I can hear the buzz on my computer speakers. If I turn off capture mode it goes away, so it is not in my speakers or some issue with my computer. If I proceed to capture gameplay off of my Xbox, when I preview it the "buzz" that I can hear coming through my speakers is captured in the video/audio.

If I disconnect the hdmi connections and connect the RGC to the tv and Xbox with component cables, the buzz goes away. However, the picture quality on the tv becomes unbearable, with every object tinted green. (Yes, I have swapped cables and triple checked that they were in the right slots).

My guess is that the problem is in the hdmi or on the device itself. Which wuld explain why I do not hear the noise when imply playin the Xbox and NOT recording, because my Xbox is connected directly to the A/V receiver via optical cable, and therefore the sound bypasses the hdmi port. l will know in two days, as I just ordered the legato device from Amazon. If the noise is present there too, then I will have to pursue other options. If not, then it was the device.

Just to wrap this up. The Elgato arrived. Plugged it in...works perfectly, no buzzing sound, no problems. Everything else exactly the same equipment in exactly the same locations. It was a faulty unit...as I surmised.

Thank you all for your replies.

The Maximum length of a USB cable is 5 meters (16ft).

Someone forgot to tell Amazon... http://www.amazon.com/feet-USB-Cable-Printer-Scanner/dp/B008UW8MXM

And Staples... http://www.staples.com/Startechcom-30-Active-USB-20-A-to-B-Cable-Black/product_IM1NF6371

And pretty much everyone else.

But if the issue continues after the other unit arrives I will see if using a shorter cable, or a booster addresses it.
