Question

I have a video clip that is 4 Gig . When I go to burn a dvd hd with the HD software installed, it tells me that the clip is 2.2 Gig, without the extra software it tells me that the file is 1.5Gig , My question is can anyone tell me where the missing bits are ?

Toast is going to re-encode the video as part of making the HD DVD. Toast's default appears to be a lower bit rate than your original. You can increase the bit rate in Toast Custom Encoder settings window.

I'm having a real problem with all dvd burning software. Roxio is just the latest I've tried. Every file I import expands to about 7 or 8 times the size of the original. I'm using mp4s and avi files. Is this a Mavericks thing? Apple tech support is no help on the issue as they no longer want to deal with dvd burning. Has anyone else had this problem?

There is no problem with any of the DVD burning software. File size means almost nothing when creating a video DVD. What is important is the time length of the video - a 4.3GB DVD can hold 60 minutes of standard video at best quality. It doesn't matter if your 60 minute source video is 10GB or 100mb or if you are using a Mac or a PC.
