System Freeze on Encoding

jdb

Question

Everytime I try to burn a DVD, the system freezes on the encoding screen. It appears to encode video ok, but freezes when it gets to a slideshow or menu. The prgress bar stops (or never starts) and the system hangs. It does not give an error message or anything. I can't find any help online. I tried disabling all of the system tray, but that didn't help. I've been able to burn DVDs before with other software.

Here are my specs...

Gateway GT5058

AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processor

2.00 GHz 1.87 GB of RAM

DVD Burner: TSSTCorp CD/DVDW TS-H552D

To eliminate one item at a time:

Create a new MyDVD project and only add the video.

Burn to ISO or video folder.

Does that work?

Create a new MyDVD project and only add the intro

Burn. Does that work?

Same thing with the slideshow. This will narrow down IF the problem is in one of those files.

OK

1st test: I took my video(20 mins) that I converted in MPEG2 through the VideoWave output and I`ve inserted into a new MyDVD project. This worked fine, I selected the ISO and I saw the MPEG gray window and the overhall progress was working.

2nd test: I created a new INTRO (2 mins) consisting of small part of a video that I converted in MPEG2 through VideoWave...it then created a .dmsm file. I`ve inserted this file alone within a new MyDVD project

but this did not work...I saw again the black encoding window with no progress...I had to stop the task.

Furthermore...not sure if this would be good but I went back in the VideoWave trying to convert the

.dmsm file in MPEG2 but when Rendering does the samething...a black window with no progress

3rd test: I created a new Slideshow(3mins, 25 pictures) within VideoWave but same as the INTRO....it did not work...I also tried to convert the Slideshow in MPEG2 with the VideoWave but samething as the INTRO I had a blak RENDER window with no progress.

So the only thing working so far in termes of burning (ISO in that case) was the 1st test where I used a video that I converted to MPEG2 within the VideoWave using the Output as option... I selected:

MPEG-2 for DVD , Best quality.

This is where we are

thx

I shouldn't have to go through all of this to get it to work as advertised.

But all you have done is updated your video drivers from what I can tell.

It was recommended that everyone start thier own troubleshooting thread because to many people with similar symptoms and different systems are hard to talk about all at once.

If all else fails open a ticket with our tech support departement or even give them a call.

Thanks for your help, but I did all that you suggested and it still doesn't work. Frankly, I'm not very optimistic and I'm not sure I want to continue working on this. My computer is only a few months old and the software is brand new. I shouldn't have to go through all of this to get it to work as advertised. Is there any way I could get a refund? I'm ready to uninstall. :)

Too many posters on one subject all showing about the same symptom but with different computers and different things that have been tried. To the original poster, sorry, you initial questions and answer may have been lost. To all additional posters with problems. If you have not solved your problems start your very own original thread. So that answers can be directed to your problem/solution.

Let's back up. In VideoWave, go to the top menu and select tools, options and run the video test. After the test where is the button - next to software or hardware? If it is near software your video card will not handle any of the more complex transitions. If you try to force the program to hardware to use those complex transitions, it will hang. If the updated drivers have been installed correctly, use the program that came with your update to set the card to best performance and away from best appearance. This will cause the card to ignore smoothing when you are watching the preview but will not affect the final video on the DVD.

Did you follow all the steps to update the drivers? This includes using Windows add remove programs to remove the old drivers before installing the new ones.

FYI, I am able to burn video ok, it's only slide shows that are a problem. I tried updaing my video driver and that didn't improve the situation.

Just to make sure. I am sure you made the slide show in Video Wave because the one in MyDVD has limited functionality. Open the project (slide show) in Video Wave and output to to an mpg2 for DVD ..berst. Use the icon that looks like an old time movie reel. It the project encodes properly, use that mpg2 file in MyDVD. If it doesn't, there is a problem with the slide show that could be anything from a missing image, to a bad audio file to a bad transition timing. If the encoding fails, note the time and go to the project and see what is happening during that time. You should be able to fix it.

When you go to burn the project to a DVD, make sure you use the two step iso process. First make a iso (image file) - uncheck all other options- and when the project finishes encoding, use disc copier to copy the iso file to a DVD blank. Yes it does take a few minutes longer doing it this way but results in a completed good DVD more than doing it the other way. I can't give you an estimate but I bet it is better than 95% chance. This process does separate the encoding from the actual burning so the computer can work on one thing at a time. Uneven with my, pretty fast computer, I use this method. If the iso is not encoded, I can look for problems with my project. If it is encoded, I can use disc copier to preview the disc to make sure it is what I want. Then I burn knowing that any problems at that pint are hardware or DVD blank related.

Ok, I can't even get past the first step. I created a slide show in Video Wave. When I try to output to MPEG as you mention, the system freezes (black screen in encoding dialog window, no progress). I have to 'end program' to stop it. I tried different pictures and with and without an audio track with the same result. Any thoughts?

I finally got to update the video card drivers....I had a few problems with the installation but

all is working fine now...I got to have my Intro, Slideshow and Video burned correctly...no more

black encoding window....I'm very happy and I will now continue my projects...THX FOR ALL!!

Another question. Is there an advantage to convert any VideoWave project (Intro, Slideshow, etc) to MPEG2

BEST before actually have it burned in My DVD or should I just use the .dmsm file ?

Gabriel

The only advantage that I know of is that you will find out if that project has errors so that it won't encode in MyDVD. When you make the mpg2 file, the program will stop where there is a hiccup. You'll be able to use the time of the hiccup to trouble shoot the production. You can then use that mpg2 file in MyDVD and it will not encode again. If the project is complex with a lot of videos, slides, transitions, overlays, audio files I prefer the mpg2 file encode in VideoWave. If it rather simple, I use the dmsm file directly.

Two questions. Did you update the drivers for that video card? You can find the latest drivers here. In VideoWave or MyDVD did you go to (top menu) tools> options and run the video test. You will not get a test result other than where the little dot is. If it is near hardware, then the problem is elsewhere. If it is near software, then you really need to update that card. If the dot is near software and you move it to hardware to get the other 100 transitions, then you will have problems.

How much free and defraggmented space do you have on your computer's main hard drive (c:)?

OKay this is what I did

For the INTRO

1st with VideoWave I opened my original .IFO file (created by Sony Handycam) and edited this file to

create 4 different part or segment(total 1 min) on different panels with transitions in between.I did not save my project but directly try to convert it in MPEG2 best with the Output as option...it did not render (black window)

Note: I also tried with 4 segment (panels) without any Transition in between...did not work either.

2nd with Videoware again I opened my original .IFO file and edited to create only 1 segment of about

20 sec (out of the 10 mins)...I did not save it and converted with the Output as option....this worked.

Basically at this point I can Render with 1 segment(Transition in the Storyline) but not more.

thx

Now we need to figure out why those will not render. Tackle one at a time - the Intro. The .dmsm or output to MPEG shoud both work so we need to determine what's wrong.

You state that this file is a small part of a video that you converted to MPEG with Videowave. Odd, any file created by Videowave should be ok. Try making the 2min intro again.

Start a new Videowave project

Insert the original video file

Edit it down, etc.

Does it play in the preview ok?

If so, then click on OUTPUT TO FILE and select MPEG 2 for DVD (Best)

Does that render ok?

If so, does it playback in WMP OK?

Then try this file in MyDVD project and see what happens.

I know this is very time consuming, but the only way to find the problem.

Hi ggrussell

Yes it does greyout when encoding but just for small mpeg2 video files...if it`s a bigger MPEG2 file the encoding window just remains black and at this point I need to end the VideoWare.exe task.

My Intro was created wintin VideoWave but the Slideshow through the Create Slideshow within the Photo section.

Thx for your help on this.

Hi,

I have the same problem as you guys... When I tried the .ISO file it still does not work. Encoding window is black, the hard drive work but no progress.

Here`s what I did so far

1- convert my videos within VideoWave output MPEG2

2- edited my intro (4 mins), video(20 mins) and slideshow(3 mins).

3- Then tried to burn OR create an ISO file but the same problem occur

I noticed that if a use a small part of my video file ( 2mins) than the encoding works but if I use the same file (20 mins) it does not work.

I don`t know what to do next...

thx

Gabriel, you may have the same symptoms but not the same problem or the same solution. It is much better to start a new thread to describe your problem and to post your computer specs. If you are getting a black screen when it is working, your problem may be related to your video chips or video card. You should update the drivers for the device.

If you don't know how to find new drivers and/or you don't know what video set up you have

1) Go to Windows Start (bottom left of your display)

2) Select run.

3) type in the following without the quotation marks "dxdiag"

4) Select OK

5) Look at the first screen and post what version of DirectX you have. It should be 9c (see image)

60 Look at the display tab and post the information you see there. (See second image).

I really sounding goofy but what is and where do I find the options for a iso file? I found NTSC ,PAL ,Audio device ,wave ,direst sound, multi track ,buffer path, settings, playback options and auto scroll. If it is not here where do I find it?

Thanks for the help

In MyDVD, when you click the Burn icon on the upper right corner, it will bring up the "Burn Project" window. In the section where it says Image File, check the "Save disc image file" box and provide the rest of the info in that section. Then click the Burn button. This will create the ISO file.

This is the same problem I have been having. I am just about ready to return this disk. I have been trying for over a week and nothing.
