Question

I get this using Sony DVD-R 16x/1x. I only get this reading using the Sony's. I also have some Vebatim's that work perfectly.

Details,

Windows XP

Drive: NEC DVD RW N-2510A

Program: Creator Classic

I've used this program for upwards of 300 DVD's of data storage with no issues related to discs. I've used numerous brand names, never bying the cheapest discs from Fry's, CompUSA or elsewhere. I'm simply curious if the Sony's aren't compatable or something else is up. I figure that Sony's are a good quality disc.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

What you might do is make sure the firmware for your drive is the latest.Often firmware updates are for media compatibility. The best bet is to find a brand that works for you and stick with it.

Thanks for the info. In checking on a firmware update, the site stated that is was good for a media update and not much more.

I think I'll just go back to media that I know works.

I appreciate your response.

You're welcome. That media update to the firmware might help.Be careful if you do the firmware update!!Doing it incorrectly or losing power when doing it can cause the drive to become nothing but a piece of useless metal and plastic.I don't mean to alarm you, just be careful. If your drive isn't on the latest firmware then I would definately update it.

A 'media' update probably indicates that the update will allow your DVD writer to read more types of 'media' (DVDs). Even good quality DVDs cannot be read by certain writers without updates. Manufacturer's frequently post the type of DVDs that will work with their writers on their websites.

As long as you get the update from the DVD manufacturer's website and follow the directions, you shouldn't have any problems.

This is just re-stating the above in different words.

The firmware of a DVD drive is what enables it to tell what kind of DVD disc has been put in - by brand, and by speed. If the firmware doesn't have information about a given kind of disc (say, Sony DVD-R 16x/1x), all the drive can see is some wierd piece of plastic.

To use anything that isn't alread in the firmware (say, something that came out after you bought the drive), the firmware would have to be updated.
