Rotating Video?

ksmith51

Question

I did a really dumb thing. :)

My excellent digital camera also takes simple video (as compared to a terrific digital camcorder that also takes marginal stills). I will frequently take stills in portrait orientation if it makes sense during composition; I just rotate the image(s) in PhotoShop Elements once I bring the stills across into my PC so slide shows or display look upright on my monitor. So, I didn't think anything at the time about taking a video in portrait mode.

Now, I can't figure out how to rotate the video 90 degrees into portrait mode now that the video is on my PC. Is that even possible? Help files within the Roxio product doesn't offer any clues.

"D'Oh!" on me. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am not sure this will work in your situation, you might try. Use the rotate effect and ajust the amount of rotation and length of rotation. You will see the black background in the areas where you have turned it.

There may be a better way of rotating the video but this is pretty simple. Start in Video Wave. In your production, add a color panel where you want to rotate the video. Now add the section of the video that was recorded "wrong" to the overlay track. Double click on the track in the overlay, a window will open. Select position and then rotate it the amount you want (90 degrees). Remember that you are turning a rectangular picture so it will not fill the display. Choose a color panel that would compliment the video.

My understanding from this post is that rotation is not possible in V7.5.

Thanks Jess, I checked it out and your right, however, you can use the rotate effects transition and get the video to rotate. I knew I had done it in v7.5 and when I found that old post I was thinking that is what I had done, but it wasn't, I used the rotate effect and that worked. However, you have to put the video in the video track instead of using a color panel so you will see black background.

Not so dumb and lots of us have made this mistake.

Are you using WindowsXP? If you are, the free program Windows Movie Maker will allow you to rotate the video 90 degrees. You can then do a Save Movie file and save it for a DV camcorder. You will get a new movie file that you can use in VideoWave.

Of course, if you've filmed it in 'widescreen', the movie will be 'squished'.

Hope that helps.

That's what I used, Windows Movie Maker 2, then imported it into VideoWave. You can use the Rotate effect in VideoWave but, for some reason, you can't rotate it exactly 90 degrees. You could also try VirtualDub but, from what I remember, the results weren't too good.

To be honest, the best thing is to develop a better memory and hold the camera the right way round when producing video clips. :)
